Simple Practices for an Environmentally Friendly Life

Living an environmentally friendly lifestyle might seem daunting, but small, everyday actions can make a significant impact. By integrating simple practices into your daily routine, you can contribute to a healthier planet. Here are some practical tips to help you become more eco-conscious in your daily life.

1. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

The classic mantra of environmentalism is still highly relevant.

  • Reduce: Minimize waste by choosing products with minimal packaging, buying in bulk, and opting for digital over paper when possible.

  • Reuse: Invest in reusable items like water bottles, coffee cups, shopping bags, and food containers. This reduces the need for single-use plastics.

  • Recycle: Follow local recycling guidelines to ensure you're correctly separating recyclables from general waste. Composting organic waste is another excellent way to reduce landfill contributions.

2. Conserve Water

Water is a precious resource that we often take for granted. Simple ways to conserve water include fixing leaks, shorter showers, and turning off taps. Don’t let the water run while brushing your teeth or washing dishes!

3. Energy Efficiency

Reducing energy consumption not only lowers your utility bills but also decreases your carbon footprint. You can start by switching to LED bulbs which use significantly less energy and last longer than traditional incandescent bulbs. Unplug your devices as electronics and chargers consume energy even when not in use. You can unplug them or use a power strip to easily turn them off. Adjust your thermostats! Lower your thermostat in winter and raise it in summer. Not drastically but I think we can all survive (and save some money) by adjusting it a little. At our home we keep the temperature for summer in the low 70s(F) (21-22C) or mid 60s (F) (18-20C) for winter. You can use programmable thermostats to optimize heating and cooling when you're not home - they’re genuinely a great investment. 

4. Sustainable Transportation

Transportation is a major source of greenhouse gas emissions. You can make a difference by walking or biking for short trips, using public transportation if it’s available in your area, or even investing in an eco-friendly vehicle if that's a possibility. 


5. Mindful Eating

Your food choices have a significant environmental impact. Meat production is resource-intensive. Incorporating more plant-based meals into your diet can reduce your carbon footprint. This by no means means you need to become a vegan or vegetarian. Just give some thought to incorporating more plant-based items into your diet and cut down on meat consumption. For instance, instead of having a steak for dinner opt for a vegetarian option such as a curry, a hearty veggie soup, or a pasta dish. If you’re not used to not eating meat, you may think vegetarian meals may be unfulfilling but when you cook them yourself or find a restaurant that can make them with more than just rabbit food, you may just find your next favorite dish! 

Mindful eating can also include buying locally and seasonally. Support local farmers and reduce the environmental costs of transporting food long distances. This also helps lower greenhouse gas emissions. Try to reduce food waste. Plan meals, store food properly, and compost scraps to minimize food waste. You can also use veggie scraps for a delicious and nutritious vegetable stock at the end of the week! 


6. Eco-Friendly Products

Choosing products that are kinder to the environment can make a big difference. You can try natural cleaning products. Try switching to biodegradable and non-toxic cleaning products, or research how to make your own! 

Look for products that are certified organic and fair trade to support sustainable farming practices and fair labor conditions.

Another easy way to practice sustainability is mindful fashion choices. Create a beautiful wardrobe by buying quality over quantity, choosing sustainable brands, and avoiding fast fashion. Stick with companies that create quality clothing that will last long periods. I believe everyone should be able to express themselves through their clothing choices, but I also believe buying loads of cheap, poor-quality items only to wear them once or twice is incredibly damaging to more than just the environment, but that’s another blog. Aim to build your wardrobe with pieces you love and will wear multiple times. 

7. Support Green Businesses

Support companies that prioritize sustainability. Try and shop locally. You can reduce your carbon footprint by buying locally-produced goods which also helps out your community and economy at the same time. You can also look for brands with strong environmental commitments and certifications such as B Corporation, Fair Trade, and Organic.

8. Reduce Plastic Use

Plastic pollution is a major environmental issue. Reduce your plastic consumption by saying no to single-use plastics. Reduce your use of plastic straws, utensils, and bags. Opt for reusable alternatives instead. Bulk buying is also a great way to reduce packaging waste!

9. Mindful Consumption

Adopt a more mindful approach to consumption. Buy what you need. Quality over quantity. Repair and upcycle.

Being environmentally friendly doesn't require drastic changes; it's about making conscious choices that collectively make a big difference. By incorporating these simple practices into your daily routine, you can contribute to a healthier planet and inspire those around you to do the same. Every small step counts towards creating a sustainable and healthier future for you and your loved ones.
